The Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is the first higher educational institution in Bulgaria. Its history is an embodiment and a continuation of centuries of cultural and educational tradition in this country.
The prestige of the School of Higher Education grew rapidly with the cultural and educational mission it acquired after the Liberation in 1878.
The Faculty of Medicine exists within the structure of Sofia University from 1917 to 1950, when it is separated and based Medical University – Sofia.
In 2003 Medical faculty was restored in the structure of Sofia University. The Accreditation Council of the National Assessment Agency and accreditation gave a positive assessment of the Project to open the Faculty of Medicine as the main unit in the structure of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. So, in the academic year 2007/2008, Sofia University accepted its first class of “Medicine” students in the restored Faculty of Medicine and in December 2013, the first batch successfully graduated.
Year by year, Sofia University has developed into an important academic and scientific centre on the Balkans, a well-developed academic institution with European dimensions. Today Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is the largest and most prestigious educational and scientific centre in the country.
The program aims at offering theoretical knowledge and practical skills through highly qualified teaching, in English, combined with the opportunity to exercise it in practice in the most modern preclinical and clinical medical complexes in Bulgaria.
The training of students in the Medical faculty is carried out according to the curriculum, in accordance with the Ordinance on the unified state requirements for acquiring an educational qualification degree “master” in the specialty “Medicine” in Bulgaria, as the requirements are met at the same time of Directive 93/16/EEC of 04/05/1993. The duration of the study is 6 years (12 semesters)

The training is in 3 levels and lasts 6 years.
Level 1 – preclinical training, is 2 years. It gives students general biological and medical knowledge.
Level 2 – clinical training, lasts 3 years. It aims to master the methods for diagnosis and treatment of the disease process. After the 3rd year, the training is carried out according to a cyclic system, in which the exams are held after the completion of a training cycle of 4-6 weeks in the respective discipline.
Level 3 – undergraduate practice, which is conducted in university hospitals and hospital bases. It is finalized with state exams in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, hygiene, infectious diseases, epidemiology, and social medicine.
